Commentary: John 10:1-10
Jesus said: “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever does not enter a sheepforl through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber. But whoever enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens it for him, and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”
Jesus, as you describe the sheep and the shepherd, I think about what my role is in this analogy. I know you are the good shepherd. Later in this same gospel you tell us you are the gate. I know as one of your followers, I am your sheep, listening for your voice. As a mother, I think I could also be the gatekeeper. Help me to discern the thief from the shepherd for my children. There are so many influences out there and I need to be aware of how they could be affecting my little ones. Help me to teach them how to recognize your voice and how to avoid those thieves who would take them away from you. Whether in the schools, in the media, books, computer and television, or even friendships with those who may not know you yet themselves, I am the gatekeeper of my children’s formation. I know I can only do this if I know your voice also, help me to seek you in everything, to sharpen my senses.
Resolution: Pray your favorite vocal prayer for discernment of good influences for your children today.
