Commentary: Luke 9:22-25

“If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

Jesus, as a mother, I have had the idea of being open to life instilled in my heart since the beginning of my marriage. While openness to life has inherent sacrifices associated with it, it is also important to recognize the need to be open to death. Jesus, help me accept my vulnerability and the reality that death is ultimately a path to you, whether it is my own death or those of my loved ones. It is not something to hide from, despite the pain that comes with it. Help me to fight my desire to hide from pain by voluntarily dying to my own preferences daily.
